Lower ABV There are a LOT of Cherriers in Sancerre! This wine is from a domaine founded in Verdigny by Pierre Cherrier and run since 1994 by his sons, François and Jean-Marie. They farm around 20HA of vines in five different Sancerre locations and their wines each reflect the vineyards’ micro-terroir. Les Cailloux is on what are called “silex” soils. Here the Kimmeridgian limestone most of Sancerre is famous for have worn away to reveal a layer of harder cracked flint. Silex Sancerre is always nicely ripe – the dark flint warms up during the day and radiates ripening heat at night. And also more precise, elegant and, well, flinty than other Sancerre.
Like here. In the challenging 2024 vintage, the Cherrier’s old vines took advantage of the silex to ripen through the green flavors Sauvignon can present while retaining vibrant minerality, cut, and crisp, refreshing, fruit. White citrus, lemon and Granny Smith apple aromas and flavors are framed by a distinctive layer of flint and chalk minerality and lifted by a dollop of lemon zest and smoky gunflint on the mouthwatering, dry, finish. In weight, flavor profile and feel, this is the very best kind of “old-school” Sancerre, built to refresh on its own and pair perfectly with seafood and warm goat cheese salad. The old-school pricing is pretty refreshing, too!
For You If: You’re looking to get back to classic Sancerre weight, refreshment and cut over the richer, softer, Sancerre we’ve seen in recent warmer vintages; you’ve enjoyed the value of Loire Valley “baby Sancerre” and “just like Sancerre” options but like real Sancerre at value prices even more!
Not For You If: You like your Sancerre Sauvignon Blanc to deliver lots of body, creamy textures, or oodles of ripe stone and tropical fruit – this is perfectly ripe at 13.0% alcohol and not at all hard-edged, but does show more crispness and minerality than that.
