Organic/Bio As Wine Advocate said last year, “Giuseppe Russo makes some of the best wines on Etna. Full stop.” And this is Doug’s favorite pretty much every year. From roughly 50 year-old vines at 500 meters, it’s 150 cases per year of Nerello Mascalese with a splash of Cappuccio fermented with native yeasts and aged 18 months in big, old, French oak. There’s lush dark red and blue/black fruit, a feeling of flesh and breadth, vigorous acids and tannins, and a definite close of Etna volcanic minerality. Better with a decant and/or after 2026, but already a beautiful wine for rich meats, stews and pastas.
For You If: You think a wine that combines the best parts of Burgundy, Barolo and Brunello sounds appealing; you’re after something with some of the flavor profiles of Chateauneuf du Pape with better structure, more minerality and not so much alcohol.
Not For You If: You're looking for the intense grip of Barolo or the direct fruitiness of most Rhone reds.
"A slightly funky nose with a touch of reduction at the very first sniff. This shows strawberries, lemon zest, watermelon and peaches. Soft and smooth on the attack, this has velvety tannins and crisp, lifted acidity. Energetic due to its freshness and precise finish."
