Pinot Bianco (also called Weissburgunder) made the trip from Burgundy and today thrives in the high-altitude vineyards near Appiano, just south of Bolzano. A naturally high-acid grape that turns even more crisp at altitude, Pinot Bianco gets a bit more amplitude and spice when a part of the cuvee ages a bit in big, old, wood casks.
In 2023, this is full of ripe and tangy orchard fruits – yellow apples and crisp pear – with a solid dollop of fresh-squeezed lime juice and touch of salty minerality. As Vinous says, “This flows easily across the palate, remarkably fresh and lifted yet full of energy. It finishes crisply refreshing with a slight twang of sour citrus that puckers the cheeks." In Bolzano they drink it with cheese dumplings, pork cutlets and trout. Try it with crab or shrimp and you’ll love it even more!
For You If: You like Pinot Grigio and want a bit more cut; you enjoy seafood-friendly wines like Muscadet or Chablis and want just a touch more fruit; you’re having crab – this is brilliant with crab.
Not For You If: You’re after a rich and oaky white – this sees some barrel, but just to shape the wine a bit vs flavor it; you’re after Sauvignon Blanc’s explosive citrus character – this is more relaxed than that.
