Tuscany’s Sangiovese grape gives a different wine in Brunello than in Chianti to the north: darker, fleshier, richer, more perfumed and, often, needing many more years to really be delicious. At Donna Olga, winegrower Olga Peluso aims for something different – Brunello full of classic Montalcino character and power in a drink whenever you want to style.
Critic Audry Frick described it perfectly in her 92 point write-up in JebDunnuck.com: “Sporting a dark red/ruby hue, the 2020 Brunello Di Montalcino is ripe on the nose with notes of crushed blackberries, candied flowers, balsamic herbs, and mossy earth. Medium to full-bodied, it fills the palate with a rounded feel and a chocolaty texture as well as refined, ripe tannins, even acidity, and a balanced finish. It's a very charming wine to enjoy over the next 6-8 years.”
Or as James Suckling said in his 92 point praise, “Drink now.” It’ll shine with a rich pasta meat sauce or lasgagna and spice up even a humble deliver pizza. Or, for maximum impact, enjoy it like the Tuscan’s do, with a big hunk of rare grilled steak finishes with a sprinkle of flaky salt and cracked pepper served over a bed of olive oil-dressed arugula. Yum!
For You If: You already know you like Brunello and are after one you can enjoy now without taking out a mortgage; you’re curious about Brunello and want to try one that’s already showing well; you’re after one of the most perfect pairings for grilled beef on earth.
