Pinot from Carneros, at the southern end of Napa/Sonoma, gives a distinctive blend of freshness (from the cold bay nearby) and heft (from the clay-rich soils). This is a great example, serving up bold black cherry and blackberry fruit with accents of wild mushroom and sweet spice. The rich mouthfeel and very fine tannins means this could handle anything from beef stew to planked salmon while staying fun for solo sipping, too. As Wine Enthusiast says in the 93 point review, "Balanced on a high level, this intense and concentrated wine is memorable now and sure to improve with further age. Focused black currant and black cherry flavors race across the palate, driven by nervy acidity and muscular tannins."
For You If: You’re after the classic California Pinot blend of silky feel and dark, rich, fruit with a just-right kiss of oak.
Not For You If: You’re looking for lots of minerality or you want something delicate – this is substantial, if smooth and silky, Pinot.
