Napa Cabernet grown to full ripeness and flavor but slowly enough and in a cool enough site to retain vivacity, purity and style. Then turned into Cabernet by an Italian-American winemaker who combines our USA preference for generous fruit with a European’s conviction that the point of wine is to taste like where it comes from and its ultimate purpose is to make your dinner taste better. And who is proud enough of his and his wife’s work to put their names right on the label. And even though the critics rave and production is tiny, remains modest enough to sell it at a price that encourages drinking more than collecting and bragging.
That’s what Massimo and Erin di Costanzo do with all their wines, especially with Di Co Cab, a 430 case production bottling from a site in Oak Knoll with a splash of Coombsville fruit for spice. Vinous isn’t wrong in their 91 point review: “a potent, burly wine. Black fruit, cloves, licorice and menthol hit the palate, all framed by firm chocolatey tannins that lend considerable structure. This is a pretty serious, dense and mouth-filling wine for an entry-level offering.” But even that potency is restrained and classic. As Wine Advocate says in their 91+ point write-up, “It's fresh and juicy-smelling, loaded with a mix of red and black cherries. It's medium to full-bodied, fine and silky on the palate, punctuated by a long but firm, dry finish."
For You If: You love rich Napa Cabernet in the style of classicists like Spottswoode and Corison at a price that encourages drinking on a Tuesday vs hoarding for a special occasion – that’s not exactly what’s going on here, but it’s not exactly wrong, either.
Not For You If: You’re looking for something thick or chocolate-milk-like in flavor or texture – this has minerality and a more fine, fluid, feel.
