Organic/Bio Nothing super fancy going on here in a wine that proves melding the old ways with modern ripeness and cleanliness can turn out something pretty deliciously satisfying. Jean-Marc Autran farms grapes in and around the Cotes du Rhone village of Sable the old way – organically (certified) relying on hand work, some tractors and lots of care to ripen his fruit to big flavor at an easy 13.5% alcohol. This wine from his Cotes du Rhone vineyards blends around 80% Grenache with traditional partners Syrah, Cinsault and Carignan. Fermentation and aging in old concrete tanks – some dating from his grandfather’s building the current winery in 1947 – lets the fruit sing out without any masking wood.
It’s full of dark red raspberry fruit complicated by notes of black olive and what the French call garrigue – the smells and flavors of wild thyme, rosemary and lavender that dot the southern Rhone countryside. There’s a solid, chunky, feel here – nobody is going to call this “light”! – but none of the candied character or excessive alcohol that can make modern Cotes du Rhone a little hard to drink. And while the texture and structure make this a terrific wine with all kinds of food, the supple finish makes it a delightful solo sip, too. A lot of “old school” wine for the money.
