Lower ABV Coda di Volpe held a prime place in the Roman vineyard and, after empire, picked up its current name because the long, gangly, grape bunches reminded growers of the tail of a fox. Libero Rillo at Fontanavecchia is helping to re-popularize the grape, showing that grown in deep volcanic soils and made cool and in steel, it delivers the kind of salty, minerally, peach-and-citrus, refreshment modern drinkers love in Albarino and similar wines.
Generous aromas of tangy peach, lemon and citrus blossoms pull you into a wine that compels attention. The intense flavors of citrus, peach, crushed stones and wild herbs are delivered with tension and focus. The wine is crunchy, minerally, almost salty and the flavors really sail on through the mouthwatering finish. A terrific shellfish wine, for sure, but packs enough of a flavor punch to invite pairing with pasta and poultry and just to sip solo.
For You If: You enjoy the whites of Coastal Spain like Albarino and Godello for their clear fruit flavors and touch of salty minerality; you love crisp Italian whites and want to enjoy one with just one notch more fruit than most.
Not For You If: You’re looking for the super snappy citrus and herb of NZ Sauvignon Blanc or the oaky richness of New World Chardonnay.
