Organic/Bio At the very top of San Lorenzo, at 750 meters elevation, almost too high to be “Etna Rosso,” Russo farms a 0.7HA plot of vines planted in the early 1940s. Originally they were trained on traditional albarello (stakes) but now have some wires to support the old, frail, vine trunks. Darker and more powerful than the “regular” San Lorenzo, this is Etna Rosso for grilled and roasted meats. Around 700 bottles made.
“This shows plenty of crunchy and fresh red fruit mixed with dried Mediterranean herbs, orange peel and hibiscus. Some smoky, dusty earth undertones, too. Medium-bodied. So steady and persistent on the palate with crunchy acidity and a chalky, mineral backbone. Steady and long finish. Drink or hold.”
“The Girolamo Russo 2020 Etna Rosso San Lorenzo Piano delle Colombe is more open-knit compared to the 2019 vintage (I had the opportunity to taste the two side by side). This is a lovely wine with fine fiber and delicate fruit notes of wild berry, crushed stone and white pepper. The 2019 vintage has a certain magic that does not completely manifest here (in this hot vintage). However, the wine shows the supreme elegance of Etna.”
“Unusually for this estate, Piano delle Colombe is 100% Nerello Mascalese, from vines over 80 years old growing in a small plot within San Lorenzo. Fermented in small open vats and matured for 18 months in one 500l oak tonneau and one used barrique, it's balsamic and earthy with some ripe red and black berry scents. Juicy, intense and spicy, its subtly grippy tannins cradle tangy brambly berries, pomegranate and a fresh herbal finish.”
