Organic/Bio Who knew Primitivo could be this…well, good? Wines from the Italian cousin of California’s Zinfandel are usually pruny, loaded with nail polish remover volatile acidity, and/or bursting with leather/horse poop brettanomyces. But it turns out if you create a winery in 2005 dedicated to certified organic, low-yield, farming of Primitivo at 1,000-plus feet elevation near Puglia’s Adriatic Sea coast you can make something very special indeed.
From some of Pietraventosa’s best plots and done all in steel, this is just joyfully delicious. There’s fresh from the vine blackberry and just picked late-season black cherry fruit on the nose and palate with the kind of freshness and lift you’d never expect from this grape or smoking-hot place. Ditto the almost salty minerality and aged balsamic zing on the mouthwatering finish. Certainly the best Primitivo I’ve ever tasted and a terrific companion for sunny day solo sipping, burgers, pizza and all kinds of hearty Italian-inspired fare. Very, very, highly recommended, especially if (like me) you “just don’t like Primitivo.” You’ll like this one.
For You If: You’ve given up on Primitivo and are open to having your mind blown just a little bit; you like juicy, fresh, reds from Beaujolais, Piemonte, and cooler California sites and are willing to believe that Primitivo can fit in with that crowd; you’re having pizza.
Not For You If: You’ve tried Primitivo in the past and LIKED the dried fruit and earthy flavors you found – this is wildly fresh and juicy; you’re looking for full-bodied and/or well oaked wine with a grippy finish – this has plenty of presence, but really dances on your palate.
