Freisa is Nebbiolo’s slightly wilder younger sibling. In youth it’s a bit brash and wild, redolent of wild strawberry and black cherry fruit, dark florals, and tannins just as firm as Nebbiolo if chunkier and more open.  I’m told if you let it age 10 years, it mellows and picks up Nebbiolo’s elegance and purity. But if you want that, buy Nebbiolo.  Drink this for the sheer joy of it and, especially, the double-handful of dripping-ripe strawberry on the finish.
