Bordeaux’s 2019 vintage was a stunner, giving wines with plenty of luscious fruit and also a distinct minerality and sense of sleekness and verve. Thierry Gaudrie captured the quality of the vintage perfectly in this blend of 74% Merlot and 26% Cabernet Franc fermented in concrete and aged 12+ months in around 35% new French oak. This is focused and silky at first taste before the rich black currant/blackberry fruit and hints of chocolate and spice fan out to coat your palate. Finishes with substantial and very fine tannins that grip just enough to keep the flavors flowing through a long, generous, finish. A terrific steak wine right now and gaining the richness for stews and lamb with air or cellar time.
For You If: You’re looking for refined but nicely intense Bordeaux to enjoy with a steak now and over the next 10+ years; you want to drink Bordeaux that tastes like to cost $40 for a lot less.
Not For You If: You’re looking for a “Napa style” Bordeaux that’s plush and smooth – this is focused and finishes silky-firm.
