Venture off the beaten Loire Valley path to discover the DELICIOUS Sauvignon Blanc. The Coteaux de Giennois appellation is small - under 200 acres in total - and tends to get lost in the shadow of nearby Sancerre and Pouilly-Fume. Owned by brothers Fernand and Jean-Francois Thibaut, Villargeau is the top producer in the region and crafts crackling, fresh, Sauvignon Blanc from vines growing on fractured slate and gravel.
You'll find big aromas of mixed citrus - grapefruit, lemon, lime - with a hint of cut grass and flinty stones in the background. On the palate it's clear, juicy, and fresh, with green grape and white grapefruit flavors getting complexity from the gunflint and smoke notes that made Pouilly-Fume so famous. The finish is long, dry and crisp, leaving juicy fruit and stony flint notes lingering on nicely. This is delicious to drink all by itself just for refreshment, but do try it with fresh vegetables (even asparagus!), seafood, herbed chicken and – of course – a classic French warm goat cheese salad. You’ll love it!
For You If: You love the citrus and mineral cut of Sancerre but not so much the high prices; you’re looking for a stylish white to serve to a crowd with or without food.
Not For You If: You’re after the super tropical flavors of New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc – this is really expressive, but not quite that wild; you really, really, need the wine to say “Sancerre” on the label – this just says it in the glass.
