Organic/Bio Lower ABV Malandes has two small plots of vines here, one facing south and planted in 1967 and the other more north and planted in 1987. The oak program at Malandes has been evolving looking to maximize the positive impacts of wood on texture and refinement while minimizing any oak flavors in the finished wine. In 2022, this cuvee was fermented and aged 100% in barrel, but mostly in larger 500L casks and only 10% new wood. While this certainly “should” get time in cellar to mature, it’s pretty iresistable right now with plenty of intense green fruit, a touch of orange zest, and just a hint of spice from the barrel. And the best palate and finish length here since 2014. An outstanding Grand Cru Chablis.
“Wafting from the glass with aromas of honeycomb, vine blossom, orange zest and nutmeg, the 2022 Chablis Grand Cru Vaudésir is medium to full-bodied, satiny and suave, with a fleshy core of fruit, lively acids and a saline, spice-inflected finish. This, too, is a fine success.”
