Organic/Bio A new wine from old family vines. The vines were planted in what was thought to be Grand Cru Vaudesir in 1967 by the grandfather of current owners Amandine Marchive and Richard Rottiers and was always part of their Vaudesir bottling. A few years ago, officials from the INAO came to Chablis and re-surveyed the boundaries of the Grand Crus. Much to everyone's surprise, it turned out this 1.25 acres of vines was actually just over the line and in Valmur!
So now Malandes has a 3rd Grand Cru, this one from due south-facing vines near the top of Valmur on fairly clay rich soil. Around 70% of the wine ferments in oak and ages there 7 months and then the full blend spends 12 months in stainless steel. The wood has already been gobbled up by the wine with just a touch of vanilla remaining to add sweetness to the very deep spice pear and green apple fruit at the wine’s core. Key lime citrus lifts the middle and grows on the finish where the seashell/limestone starts to show and grows through a very long finish. This is delicious right now, but it would be a shame to not let some sit for 3-5 years so the iodine and rocky minerality can come out even more.
