Organic/Bio Grapes from this far west in the Marne tend to end up in mass-produced NV blends, but since their first release in 20202, the brother/sister team of Jean-Rémi and Melanie Drémont are proving that really hard work can make magic here. "Hard work" means organic farming, bee hives in the vineyard, sheep working between the rows, the occasional pass with a horse-drawn plow and aging base wines up to 9 months on the lees in steel, cement and large oak casks.
This is 55% Pinot Meunier, 30% Pinot Noir, and 15% Chardonnay from across their 7.5 HA of vines with 80% in steel, 20% in barrel, base 2019 with 30% reserve wine and no malo. There's plenty of breadth to the aromas and palate here with tiny bubbles lifting notes of lemon, green pear, toast and a whole cabinet of spices. The interplay of steeliness (no malo) and ripe fruit is compelling, as is the lemon and sea salt, bone dry, finish. Wow.
For You If: You're after Champagne that is both generous and precise, easy to drink and even easier to pay a lot of attention to; you like to feel some breadth and weight in your Champagne with a bone dry (no dossage) finish.
Not For You If: You're a Pinot Meunier hater and aren't open to discovering that it can make great Champagne when given slightly over-the-top care in the vineyard and cellar - there's PM here and you can taste it, which we think is an asset!
