Saumur-Champigny is arguably the best place to grow Cabernet Franc in the Loire Valley and certainly the most famous - at least within France. The fame is because Parisians began using the motorway to reach weekend houses in the late 1950s, when the Samur-Champigny AOC was created. The quality is from the yellow, porous, limestone tuffeau that drains away water as soon as it falls, but keeps a bit trapped to be released to the vines as summer heat sets in.
The Duveau family was making Saumur-Champigny from 1835, well before it had a name or fame. They farm the old way, working the land gently and encouraging biodiversity and picking ripe, but not overripe. In the winery, they let the fruit tell its own tale with no oak at all. The 2019 is just delicious, with ripe redcurrant and red berry fruit getting complexity by a few twists of a black pepper mill and a pinch of dried herb. The tannins are silky - so you don't really notice them - and firm - so your food tastes better and you're ready for the next bite. A classic bistro red.
For You If: You’re getting ready to sit down to a meal of spicy sausages, grilled lamb, lentil stew, beefy steak or just a snack of salted peanuts and wonder, “What would taste good with this?”
Not For You If: You’re looking for the lean, tart, bell-pepper Cab Franc flavors of many French examples or the creamy/sweet texture of many New World examples – this is crunchy ripe.
