So much care and effort go into Fontanavecchia's "everyday" Aglianico that it's hard to believe it sells for such a song! Aglianico is Campania's most important red grape, and it can be used to make dark, powerful, leathery wines that reward (and require!) a decade-plus aging after release. Here the Rillo family respects Algianico's power, but crafts the wine into something joyful to drink with any casual meal or cookout fare. A slow, gentle, fermentation gives plenty of fruit and structure, a year in French oak rounds off the tannins without adding "oak" flavor, and then years in bottle before release lets the wine develop into something full of fruit supported by rounded, supple, tannins.
Wine Enthusiast describes it nicely in their 90 point review: "The restrained, elegant nose leads with aromas of vanilla and cedar, before slightly weightier notes of earth, cranberries and cherries emerge. Those earthy, astringent elements headline the warm, peppery palate, which is framed by polished yet authoritative tannins."
For You If: You’re looking for an Italian red that has more dark fruit, black olive, and velvety texture than most; you’re after something to enjoy with wintery roasts, ragus and stews that big red fans will even enjoy solo.
Not For You If: You’d like to drink something light or smooth – this has real weight on the palate and a firm – if attractive! – grip on the long finish.
