Lower ABV From a small plot of vines just outside Cote Rotie, this is 100% Syrah that has the savory richness to pair with roasted, grilled and smoked foods and the bold fruit to delight during solo sipping, too. It’s big in mouthfeel and texture, and also low in alcohol (just 12.5%!). And while it’s from the land of $100+ Syrah that needs 10+ years in cellar to be palatable, it’s ready to slurp down with joy tonight and crazy affordable, too.
The Vinous 93 point review of the 2020 gives you a great idea of what to expect: “Vibrant, spice- and mineral-accented red and dark berries, pungent flowers and white pepper on the perfumed nose. Juicy and appealingly sweet, offering intense Chambord and cherry-cola flavors and hints of exotic spices, olive and succulent herb flavors. Steadily building tannins add shape to a long, smoky finish that leaves echoing floral and spice notes behind.”
Last year, Wine Advocate summed up their telling of Graeme and Julie Bott’s story this way: “The wines are impeccably crafted, with an élevage in barrels that adds necessary finesse without overshadowing the terroir. They are meant to age gracefully. This is one of my favorite producers in the appellation, and it's undoubtedly a top-tier estate.”
For You If: You’re after a wine that’s very big in flavor but not so big in alcohol – this drinks medium-plus body at just 12.5%; you’re looking for something to pair with food that has a savory note – something herbal, earthy, mushroomy, etc. – this is going to rock!
Not For You If: You’re after a heavy or heavily oaked red – this has plenty of body and nice, rich, fruit and was in oak cask, but it’s more light on its feet than a 15% wine would be and buries the oak in other flavors.
