From Cloudy Bay alum Kevin Judd, Greywacke is kind of a laid-back take on the style Cloudy Bay made famous. Judd allows his Sauvignon Grapes more shade than most in Marlborough, allowing the fruit to ripen to a golden hue without loss of acidity or developing too much alcohol. He’s aiming for a more subtle, classy, version of Kiwi Sauvignon, one that is less aggressive and grassy and super easy to drink and enjoy. And he hits that mark year after year: each of the past five releases have earned 92-95 point critical raves.
Plenty of classic Marlborough aromas here with everything from black currant and nectarine to tropical fruit and citrus. It’s concentrated and ripe on the palate, giving a sense of weight, before the fine, crisp, mouthwatering finish of lime, passionfruit and wild herb kicks into high gear.
For You If: You love Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc and want one that’s delicious and classic, but doesn’t club you over the head with grapefruit and grass.
Not For You If: You’re looking for restraint – while this is less aggressive than some NZ Sauvignons, it’s still bold and expressive.
