It was only after the Cowley family purchased their 65 acre vineyard in 1998 that they discovered that it had been the site of the first vinifera grape plantings in all of New Zealand. There's even a tiny winery cellar remaining on the property from 1873. The rolling hills with clay/loess soils lower and hillsides dotted with greywacke rock, a fractured sandstone, are certainly a perfect place to grow Pinot Noir and this Sauvignon Blanc. Like this super snappy, crisp and driving example.
As Wine Advocate says in their 94 point review, "leads with a complex nose of sweet pea, cassis bramble, gooseberry, elderflower, preserved citrus and brine. In the mouth, the wine is concentrated and detailed, with fresh energy and zip ensconced in textural folds of phenolics. This is a gorgeous wine and comes highly recommended."
For You If: You like your Sauvignon Blanc to really crackle with flavor and energy and to finish with a firm, crisp, bite.
Not For You If: You're looking for the more mellow and mineral feel of Sancerre - this is bracingly sharp.
