Hartford Court is easily one of the top “traditional” California Chard houses working today in the <$100 price point and this “village” bottling shows off their skill and ethic to a “T”. Fully ripe Russian River Chard fermented and aged in French oak with the buttery goodness of 100% malolactic also done in barrel. Rich pear/apple fruit with a squeeze of peach and citrus juice, pastry crust and a bit of salted caramel flow nicely through this richly textured, not quite heavy, wine. Very, very, impressive for this price point.
For You If: You start your restaurant wine list perusal in the “Chardonnay” section; you want lots of fruit and butter/spice flavor in your Chard but still want it to be great with a meal (vs. a meal replacement); you’re looking for the world’s best pairing with Peking duck (seriously!).
Not For You If: You prefer either the lean minerality of white Burgundy or the super-rich, borderline sweet, richness of wines like Rombauer; you’re convinced that rich California Chardonnay isn’t your thing and aren’t interested in seeing if this might just change your mind…
