Deliciously toasty and generous grower Champagne at an equally delicious and tempting price. It’s a drinker’s Champagne, with tiny bubbles, a pretty light coppery color, and generous aromas and flavors of white-fleshed orchard fruits (pear, apple) wrapped in toasted hazelnut and brioche and a whiff of sea salt on the toasty, gingered, finish. For folks who drink the big names, think of it as somewhere between Veuve Clicquot and Pol Roger in style, meaning there’s plenty of class and sophistication here but served up in a style that invites consumption more than contemplation. The kind of wine you want to have in the fridge, ready to go, to celebrate the successful completion of another work day, a fun day of play, or the presence of good friends and family.
For those who want the technical stuff, the Pernet family crafts this at their cellars in Le Mesnil-Sur-Oger from grapes grown across Champagne, including the southern hillsides of Epernay (Côteaux Sud D'Epernay), the Vallée de la Marne and Sézannais. It’s a blend of hand-harvested Pinot Noir (45%), Chardonnay (40%) and Pinot Meunier, all made in tank, blended with 20-30% reserve wines, aged sur latte for around 30 months, and finished “Brut” at 6-7 g/l of dosage. The Meunier and Pinot Noir give it good breadth, the Chardonnay and time on the lees fine toastiness, and the traditional dosage a sense of richness to match the dry, clean, finish.
For You If: You want a really good, nicely toasty, Champagne to just drink with or without food and with or without a special occasion to celebrate.
Not For You If: You’re after a more austere style of Champagne like an Extra Brut or Brut Nature – this is dry, but round and finishes with generosity.
