While there’s a little bit of coppery-pink shine here, this isn’t really a “rosé.” Instead it’s purple-pink-skinned Pinot Grigio picked from Silvo Jermann’s oldest vines, all growing on glacial rock that packs a big mineral punch. After hand harvesting, the grapes are crushed and the juice and skins placed in a nitrogen-filled vat for a few hours. The goal is to add texture and intensity to aromas and flavors; the pinkish color is just a byproduct.
The wines certainly has plenty of texture and aroma/flavor! We agree with Wine Spectator that it has a “raw silk–like texture on the palate” and is “creamy but well-focused.” Wine Enthusiast describes the whole package nicely: “A steely edge of minerality opens the aromas of this wine and is followed by a mix of fresh apples and pear with lemon and fresh herbs. The palate is textured and sits with a bit more oomph than your “normal” Pinot Grigio, highlighted by beautifully balanced orchard fruit and fresh flowers, finishing with a sea salt brininess.”
For You If: You’re having meaty grilled or pan-roasted fish, picking crab, getting ready to enjoy shrimp or just noshing on some potato chips – this is going to refresh your palate and amplify the flavors of your food; you enjoy Pinot Grigio, Albarino, Chenin Blanc and/or Verdejo – the combination of flavor and mineral intensity here is pretty captivating.
Not For You If: You’re looking for something full of fruit, soft and easy – this isn’t sharp, but it’s definitely firm with the fruit wrapped up with mineral complexity.
