From 30-50 year old vines from one of the Wagram’s most important vineyards, Ried Rosenberg. Like Joe, Florian picks this rich, ripe, fruit later in the harvest and ferments most cool in stainless steel. But he’s also put around 10% into ceramic wine barrels, which adds a little of the air exchange you get in oak cask but with no oaky flavors or tannins.
The results are compelling. Deep pear, Fuji apple get lift from hints of orange zest and Grüner’s classic white pepper bite. The mouth feel is creamy and round through the middle, with zesty acids and stony mineral flavors giving lift and drive to the flavors and propelling them through a dry, bracing, finish. As Peter Mozer writes with his 92 point rating in Austria’s Falstaff wine guide, “Light golden yellow, silver reflections. Inviting aroma of yellow apple, delicate apricot and a hint of honey blossom, orange zest underneath. Juicy, elegant, creamy texture, fine acidity, mineral and good persistence, an elegant, versatile food companion.” Enjoy solo, with seafood, roast chicken, grilled sausages and, of course, Weiner Schnitzel!
For You If: You enjoy the creamy mouth feel of barrel fermented Chardonnay, the spicy richness of Pinot Gris and/or the depth and complexity of Austria’s best Grüners, all at a much better price.
Not For You If: You’re after the citric bite of Sauvignon Blanc or the deep butter and spice of barrel fermented Chardonnay – this has plenty of lift and a creamy texture, but more body than SB and no oak.
