Lower ABV Although it’s most famous in the village of Avalino, the very old Fiano grape produces snappy, fresh, wines all across Italy’s Campania region, south of Mount Vesuvius and inland from Naples. La Capranera grows its Fiano a bit further inland in the commune of Salerno near a national park that hosts the last remaining herd of the region’s traditional black goats. The goats were nearly extinct in the 1980s but have rebounded, giving the winery both it’s name and the image on its labels.
This is classic Fino – crisp, mouthwatering, a bit minerally – given just an extra bit of breadth and richness from the warm and dry 2022 growing season. At just 12.5% alcohol, it’s vibrant and fresh and finishes dry and mouthwatering. It feels nicely rich and round mid-palate before a big burst of green and yellow citrus delivers a wallop of refreshment and a pinch of dried herbs adds complexity and interest. You’ll have no problem sipping this solo anytime and it will be even better still paired up with fresh mozzarella and/or fresh from the sea shellfish. And at these savings, you can sip it all 2025 long!
For You If: You enjoy dry Italian whites that have a bit of extra texture and complexity – the dash of wild herb here is captivating!
Not For You If: You’re after something soft or oaky – this is nicely crisp and done all in steel.
