Organic/Bio The grape here is better known in the USA as Mission, the first vitus vinifera grape to make the trip from Europe (Spain) and gain widespread planting in the New World. Until the 1860s it was the only wine grape in California and was dominant there until French grapes began arriving in the 1870s. Mission gives big clusters of big grapes and makes a fairly neutral wine, so after phylloxera came to Europe and the New World, it was seldom replanted.
Ah, but when Mission/Pais vines get old, the berries get smaller and flavors much more pronounced. As you’ll taste here from vines 120-150 years old growing in Chile’s Colchagua Valley. Native Chilean Ana Cattan and Englishman Matt Ridgway pick it ripe, ferment with native yeasts and age it in tank and old cask. As JamesSuckling.com said of the 91 point 2021, this is “Such a friendly, drinkable pais with plenty of strawberries, cherries and herbs. Slightly fuller than many, with firm and fine-grained tannins on the palate. Dry and crunchy.”
For You If: You’re looking for a chillable red – that’s good at normal temps too! – to enjoy while on a picnic or at a cookout with or without food; “crunchy, red-fruited, Bojo-like” sounds good to you.
Not For You If: You’re looking for something really light or heavy/rich – this has plenty of body at 13.5% but drinks fresh and crunchy.
