Organic/Bio Lower ABV Smokin’ good Willamette Pinot Noir from a vineyard Dick Erath planted on marine sedimentary soils way back in 1968. Back then, most of the plant material available were Pinot Clones successful in California, which is why Calera and other traditional California clones make up around 65% of the wine vs only 35% or so of Willamette Valley classics Pommard and Wadensvil. Around 50% whole cluster fermentation adds spice, picking at 12.8% alcohol brings freshness, and just 9% new oak lets the fruit shine through.
And what fruit it is! This is more blue-fruited than you might expect from marine sediments and manages to be both super intense and wide open for enjoyment. As Audry Frick says in the 94 point JebDunnuck.com review, “the 2022 Pinot Noir Chehalem Mountain Vineyard is perfumed and floral on the nose, with fresh notes of ripe black raspberries, violets, sweet sage, fresh earth, and a hint of umami. The palate has a lot of purity and a crystalline, ripe feel, with a hint of delicate richness coming through.” In short, it’s delicious. And a crazy good value.
For You If: You love delicious Willamette Valley Pinot Noir that at once is distinctive and also couldn't have come from anywhere else; you're looking for a Pinot with big fruit but not big weight or thickness.
Not For You If: Well, if you don't like Pinot Noir, this won't do it for you - everyone else should dive in.
