A story so great it ALMOST overshadows the wine! In the 1980s, the Tavares family discovered 110 acres of nearly abandoned vineyards first planted in the 1600s in Alenquer, just northwest of Lisbon. After regrafting and resurrecting the vineyards, then young Sandra Tavares made her winemaking debut and the estate’s first wines in 2000. Today they are the benchmark for this exciting region.
Here Tavares works with 100% Castelão, a hearty dark-skinned grape that makes big, sometimes tough, wines. Tavares gives the wine 12 months in 3rd use French oak and then time in bottle to give a wine that’s still pretty firm, but not at all hard. Cherry and raspberry fruit is balanced by a definite savory/earthy base note and lifting, mouthwatering acidity. There’s a hint of something like real Dijon mustard, too, that has me hankering to drink this with a light chill and a chewy steak. Really captivating.
For You If: You’re up for a bit of an adventure in a wine that isn’t going to exactly line up with anything you’ve had before and is the only wine we’ve ever tried with a note of Dijon mustard, but in a good way – really!
