Lower ABV The name here has a great double meaning. “La Combe Vert” can mean “The Green Valley,” a nice description off the lovely vineyards in the Eola Hills where Ken and Erica live and make wine. But it can also mean “The Green Fault.” Ken and Erica made their first vintage of Walter Scott Pinot in a back corner of Patricia Green Cellars’ winery with permission and encouragement from co-winemakers Jim Anderson and Patty Green. So, as they like to say, it’s Patty’s “fault” that they are winemakers today.
Wine Advocate's 94 point review of the 2022 gives you a good idea of what to expect: "opens with flinty reduction that gives way to cranberry, pomegranate, raspberry, forest floor and bitters. The palate offers bright, spicy red fruit, tea-textured tannins, vibrant acidity and a long, pure finish....Approachable now, although it will develop savory complexity in bottle over the next decade or more." Already deeply satisfying (especially with duck, pork or mushrooms), it's going to grow further in cellar for a decade-plus. A terrific wine.
For You If: You're after the combination of Oregon fruit with Burgundy minerality and finesse; you like your Pinot to pair earthy richness with the deep black fruit.
Not For You If: You're after something easy-drinking for solo sipping - this has the structure and intensity to shine most brightly with food.
