Founded in 1870 along Soda Canyon in the Stags Leap foothills, White Rock is the most compelling blend of modern care and old-school tradition in all of Napa. The volcanic rock underlying their vineyard naturally gives powerful, concentrated, Cabernet. And the sustainable farming – low yields, minimal irrigation, no pesticides, hand-hoeing vs herbicides – and gentle winemaking – native yeasts, 22 months in 1/3 new, 2/3 neutral, oak – lets that power sing out.
The 2021 edition is a beauty, opening with bold scents of blackcurrant, graphite, spice and seasoned oak. On the palate, it’s poised, focused and deep, with layers of black fruit, cedar, graphite and spice flavors that are both delineated and cohesive. It’s 100% Cabernet, and you get that on the finish where Cab’s austerity, length and drive have been polished and tamed just enough for polite company by the time in oak. Terrific with steak and lamb tonight and built to improve gracefully for 20 years.
For You If: You enjoy the power and intensity of mountain Cab – like Howell Mountain – with all that aging potential and a more drinkable young structure.
Not For You If: You’re looking for the kind of plush velvet texture and sweet fruit that you only get with over ripeness and/or winemaking tricks – this is honest, muscular, traditional, Napa Cab.
