Made famous by Robert Mondavi, To Kalon Vyd in Oakville is arguably the finest vineyard in Napa and certainly the most expensive – 2021 Cabernets with “To Kalon” on the label currently sell for $400-$800+ per bottle. To the west of To Kalon, Martha’s Vineyard that Joe Heitz made famous in the 1970s and where currently releases go for $300+. And in between, surrounded on three sides by To Kalon and with Martha’s on the other, lies Oakville Station, a 40 acre plot owned by UC Davis and run as a research facility that just happens to grow grapes. Really, really, good grapes.
I don’t know what you’re looking for in Napa Cabernet, but I’m pretty sure you’ll find it here. Please don’t drink it tonight. You can and be happy, but you’ll be leaving so much potential on the table that it’s a bit of a crime. A cool cellar and 3-4 years of patience will be amply rewarded. And since it’s selling for well less than half the price of wines from its surrounding vineyards, you might as well take home double the amount! Just 24 bottles available.
For You If: You love Napa Cab, can afford this, and kind of like the idea of sneaking into To Kalon and Martha’s Vyd territory at such a very, very, nice price.
Not For You If: I dunno folks – if you don’t like Napa Cab, this won’t change your mind – everyone else should pile in if they can!
"The 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Oakville Station is just about pure perfection and is a match for anything in the vintage. All varietal from a great vineyard in Oakville, aged 20 months in 65% new barrels, it has a full-bodied, pure, focused, incredibly impressive style as well as ample cassis and black raspberry-like fruit, notes of graphite, chocolate, and spring flowers, building yet ripe and polished tannins, and remarkable purity. The purity, depth, and balance here are something to behold. As with most 2021s, 3-4 years of bottle age are warranted, but it will evolve for two decades at a minimum."
