Description of Tasting: |
The story starts with a French guy with a limp, injured American soldiers, and a WWII Willy's Jeep. It evolves into a Champagne house of 50 hectares, hundreds of oak casks, and the kind of wine quality that attracted investors like the owner of Bordeaux’s Cos d’Estournel and basketball star Tony Parker. And delivers outstanding luxury Champagne today at very, very, attractive prices. As you’ll taste for yourself when you joint Camille Cox from the winery as we pour: Jeeper Assemblage Brut When Champagne farmer Armand Gourtobe helped a couple of injured American soldiers in 1944, he didn't expect them to leave him their jeep when they shipped home. But it sure made it easier to get around, and soon locals distinguished him from the many other Gourtrobe's around Reims by calling him "Jeeper." So when his started a small Champagne house in 1949, he proudly claimed that name for his wine. Current owners Nicolas and Myriam Dubois took over the little house in 2009 with big ambitions. Spurred on by his friend and partner, Michel Reybier, owner of Cos d’Estournel in Saint-Estèphe. The house style is pinned on Chardonnay as the main grape and oak aging as the key winemaking style. And because the wines are still much better known in Europe than the USA, the prices are very attractive indeed! As usual, there is no charge for this stand-up tasting in the main shop. Just RSVP for one of the five 30-minute sessions and enjoy. You’ll leave with stars in your eyes – and Jeeps on your mind. |
