Bartholomew Broadbent created this wine as a tribute to his dad, famed taster Michael, who studied architecture before pivoting to wine. Blending 87 % Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Petite Sirah, 4% Malbec, 2% Merlot from Alexander Valley and then aged in both oak and steel, this is hugely drinkable. Richly textured and flavored, the redcurrant and black plum fruit are nicely dusted with cocoa powder and a touch of dried herb. Finishes broad and supple, with enough heft for a steak and smooth enough for casual sipping. A terrific value.
For You If: You enjoy Napa Cab more than you do Napa Cab prices; you’re after a classy California red that will pair with bold flavors at table and still stays silky enough for solo sipping.
Not For You If: You’re after the kind of density you get from Napa sites like Stags Leap – this has plenty of body but not quite that level of thickness in feel; you want a lot of oak – it’s present here, but and ingredient, not the star.
