We suspect most of these will hop into shoppers’ bags because they’re just so cute and priced so attractively for impulse giving and stuffing of stockings. That’s fine, but please don’t overlook something not so obvious: this is really good wine! It started out as regular red Port, but was allowed to rest in casks for around 20 years – some less, some longer – to take on layers of orange peel, toasted nut and caramel flavors and old Port’s unique “Tawny” color. Then most of it was bottled in normal-sized containers, but a tiny bit went into these tiny, super-fun, just right for one last sip after dinner, 60ml glass vials.
Tawny Port is bottled and released every year, but the press doesn’t cover every release. But Wine Spectator’s 91 point write up of the 2017 bottling is spot on here as well: “Elegant, with toffee, halvah, pistachio and caramel notes that have a perfumy profile as they glide through the hazelnut-edged finish.”
