Bellone was the dominant grape of this hills and valleys of Lazio, the region around Rome, in antiquity, made into a strong, sweet, nutty-brown wine consumed Roman elites at day-long symposia. After phylloxera, it was nearly wiped out by the spread of less interesting, if higher producing, Tebbiano. But studies done by Casale del Giglio’s founder Bernadino Santarelli demonstrated conclusively that Bellone is Lazio’s highest quality white grape. Now plantings are on the rise, but Giglio’s remains one of the best.
In his landmark Wine Grapes of Italy, Ian d’Agata says, "Bellone is a magical grape...a telltale luscious texture and juicy acidity, and delightful honeyed, citrus, and tropical fruit aromas and flavors.” That’s a pretty good description of the 2023 Giglio Bellone! There’s plenty of gentle fruit and a big, juicy, pop of refreshing acidity, but this dry, crisp, white remains easy to drink solo or with all kinds of salads, cheeses and lighter dishes. One of the best-selling whites in the shop for the past five years and better than ever now!
For You If: You like the mouthfeel and flavor of crisp Italian whites and want just a touch more fruit and flavor; you’re after a wine with enough citrus and stone fruit for a Sauvignon Blanc drinker without the herby bite and tang; you’re ready to take your Italian white game beyond Pinot Grigio.
Not For You If: You’re after full-bodied and/or oaky whites; you’re after the flavors of grapefruit like a New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc.
