We certainly understand why, when Wine Enthusiast tasted this early last year, they were impressed. We thought it was rock solid then, too, but we like it even better now, a year later, when it’s really starting to shine. This is from the family that owns Bordeaux’s Ch Lafitte (not THAT one; the other one whose 2016 Bordeaux was such a hit last year) and a 19th Century estate that sits just outside the eastern limit of the city of Bordeaux. It’s 53% Merlot and 27% Cabernet Sauvignon and 20% Cabernet Franc, all aged in tank (for freshness) and a mixture of new, once and twice used French oak (for roundness and spice).
With a decant or big swirl, the wine serves up lovely aromas of redcurrant, blackberry, sweet spice, graphite/lead pencil and fresh violets. The fruit turns more black - currant, plum, berry - on the palate with the spice and graphite elements gaining strength with air. Fresh cherry and mid-summer strawberry fruit sines as the wine flows into a long, nicely firm, finish that's built for food but doesn't require it. When Wine Enthusiast reviewed it last year, they tagged this with a $30 price. We think you’ll enjoy it even more at these special savings!
"This poised wine comes from an estate created in the 19th century. Still with plenty of dense tannins but also with the potential of ripe black-currant fruits, it will develop into an elegant wine. Drink from 2022."
