When you want gutsy wine of real character, where fruit plays second fiddle to earth, graphite, iron ore and, especially, firm and mouth-gripping tannins…well, Madiran Tannat from the foothills of the Peyrenese Mountains is just the thing. Here a dollop of Cabernet Franc adds dark cassis, red plum and currant notes to Tannat’s savory, minerally, earthy, core. A mushroom ragu, beef short ribs, or anything else fatty and savory is going to love this wine. As will you! From a family estate that’s been bottling since the late 1970s and makes wines both delicious and uncompromisingly delicious.
For You If: You’re ready to go beyond fruit and dig into all the other aromas and flavors that make wine distinctive; you’re looking for a refreshing match to the big flavors and intensity of rich foods; you like Tannat that doesn’t rip your mouth up.
Not For You If: You’re looking for fruity, easy, “standard” wine – this has fine fruit, but the tale is all about the non-fruit stuff and grip here.
"The wine has dark fruits, rich tannins and fine concentration. It is a young wine, the tannins and juicy black fruits both working together to develop the wine's richness. It is definitely worth aging further."
