As Antonio Galloni wrote earlier this year, “A decidedly mythical figure in the world of Champagne, Mignon’s philosophy takes familiar concepts of sustainability and expounds upon them with an almost spiritual, all-encompassing approach to following what he feels is the rhythm of nature. Vineyards are cared for with maniacal attention in every aspect. That comes through in vivid, dynamic Champagnes loaded with character.”
This is a stunning example, all Pinot Meunier done in tank with 60 months on the lees and finished at 3 g/l. As Galloni said in his 94 point rave for the Brut Nature version, “marries the textural intensity of Meunier with striking, laser-like energy that cuts straight through the mid-palate and into the finish. Saline and focused, with bright acids, the 2016 is one of the most complete and deeply satisfying Champagnes I have tasted from this vintage so far. Crushed rocks, sage, mint, dried flowers and ginger lead into the sculpted finish.”
For You If: You're looking for breadth without weight, fruit without fruitiness, sizzle without bite, something a little magical.
Not For You If: You're after something richly generous or grindingly austere - this has presence and firmness, but is beautifully balanced.
