Antonio Galloni's 95 point review in Vinous is accurate enough for where this beauty was when he tasted it last summer: "The 2021s were brought in from late September to early October, a pretty classic time frame by today's standards. As always, the wines are done with spontaneous fermentations and see 26 months in wood (relatively long for Barbaresco), 80% [Slovonian oak] cask and 20% [used French oak] tonneau for the Serraboella. These wines are surely deserving of a broader audience. The 2021 Barbaresco Serraboella is elegant, deep and beautifully polished, its recent bottling notwithstanding. Dark-fleshed fruit, incense, new leather, licorice, mocha and a touch of small-oak sweetness all build with a bit of coaxing. Young tannins are a bit forbidding at this stage. Readers will have to be patient. There's gorgeous depth and intensity here. Drink 2025-2038."
Maybe it was the day or the impact of tasting a lot of young Nebbiolo in a single session, but there was certainly nothing "forbidding" about the "young tannins" yesterday. Jose's spontaneous reaction at the tasting table is more on point: "My gosh, melting in my mouth, gobs wild picked from the bush fruit, beautiful aromatics!" And that was at 11am, just after this bottle was opened. It's only going to get better with air and/or time.
For You If: You love the aromas and flavors of Nebbiolo and a good amount of velvety grip now; you have the paitience to wait for that aromas, flavors and texture to just get better with time!
Not For You If: You're looking for "smooth" - this is hardly harsh, but there's definitely some youthful grip and bite here.
