Lower ABV Our first thought on tasting this was, “Wow – kind of like a darker and more playful Marcillac!” A better way to say it is that this deliciously captivating red is at once plump, ripe and full of dark black cherry/berry fruit and fresh and zesty enough to keep you coming back for more. Think of Bordeaux (a whiff of herb, spice, fine structure) meeting a great Beaujolais (gushing with crunchy fruit and a touch of mineral) with a dollop of Syrah’s dark fruit and hung game earthiness and you’ll be on the right track.
The Marcillac link is the grape Brocal (50%), also known as Fer in nearby Marcillac, where it creates slightly lighter “Bistro” styled reds. Around 30% Duras (a Gaillac specialty) and 20% Syrah add depth of color, richness of fruit and a fine grip of tannin that make this a beef stew and grilled meat match par excellence. Although you can certainly just enjoy this as a robust winter solo sipper and a great value Bordeaux alternative as well. Delicious wine and outstanding value.
For You If: You’re looking for a great vale, all-purpose, cookout and entertaining red that is gutsy enough to shine with burgers and chops and smooth and supple enough to just sip (with or without a light chill); you’ve been in Europe and enjoyed the carafe of house red you got at a café or bistro you just happened to stumble across because it was near your room or nearby when your feet started to hurt and you just needed to rest a bit – this is like that, but better.
Not For You If: You’re looking for the all-fruit richness of most New World reds or the heft and power of something like you’d find in the Southern Rhone – this is plenty generous and round but just 13.0% alcohol and shows a nice, lightly herbal, complexity.
