Lower ABV In the 19th Century, the wines of Chitry were sold as “Chablis” and, even today, most wine grown in Chitry is a very Chablis-like Chardonnay. But warmer slopes and ancient limestone soils bring Pinot Noir to vivacious ripeness here as well, giving wines of such highly regarded quality that they have been bottled as Bourgogne Chitry since the 1920s.
The young sister/brother team of Aurelie and Thibaut Giraudon grow wine on about 60 acres in Chitry, just outside of Chablis in northern Burgundy. Thibaut harvests each plot of their 15 acres of Pinot when the flavors are ripe and then Aurelie ferments each lot in vat and tank. In a perfect world, they’d blend all their Pinot Noir into a single cuvee and bottle it all at once. But the small cellar doesn’t allow this, so they bottle each vat as its ready, with earlier bottlings (like this one!) showcasing light, fresh, aromas and flavors and later releases more structure and grip.
This is an early bottling, and it’s vivid, exciting and reviving with a chill and richer than you’d expect served at normal red wine temperature. The shimmering, translucent, ruby red color that’s easily seen through doesn’t prepare you for the big “pop” of flavor intensity here. Late season cherry and raspberry fruit are sweetly rich and balanced by tangy cranberry and accents of mid-summer flowers and earthy spice. A bold squirt of raspberry/cherry juice delivers a zesty tang on the dry, mouthwatering, finish. Whether you’re looking for a change from Provençal rosé to beat the heat or just something to cheer you while the rain falls, this is a winner for summer and will delight at autumn feasts, too. Aurelie says 2023 is her best vintage ever for this wine. And with 10 vintages or so of experience with the wine, we have to agree.
For You If: You normally enjoy Pinot Noir from Burgundy, Oregon or the cooler parts of California; you’re after something perfect to enjoy with a chill with planked salmon AND serve a bit warmer with richer Pinot-friendly foods; you like getting one heck of a deal – this wine is seriously underpriced.
Not For You If: You prefer your Pinot Noir on the heavier, more dense, side; you want to taste overt oak on your Pinot – this is done all in tank.
