In southern Catalonia, Terra Alta is a place of high mountains, steep valleys, and old vines of great potential that remained overlooked until neighboring Priorat burst into prominence 30 years ago. Potential is realized here with bold dark black and blueberry fruit and signature scents of roasted meat, dusty slate, smoke and earth. Firm, fine, tannins and slatey minerality make your mouth water as a pop of pomegranate shows on the finish. A great cookout/roast meat red that, at age 6+ is raring to go.
For You If: You’re looking for a touch of Priorat character at a much lower price; you enjoy the blue/black-fruited reds of Rousillon in France; descriptors like “scorched earth,” “charred meat” and “wet slate” make your mouth water.
Not For You If: You’re looking for smooth and polished – this has drying grip and feels a bit chunky; you’re after the spice/vanilla/chocolate of new wood – none here!
