This is STAGGERING value in very high-end Champagne that is nicely mature in profile but still fresh, mouthwatering, and far too easy to drink. The Domaine is small - just 15 acres of vines - divided into 25 plots that are farmed, picked, and made into wine separately. This far north in Montagne de Reims, Pinot Noir can struggle to mature but Pierre Fresne coaxes the 40% Pinot Noir, 25% Pinot Meunier and 35% Chardonnay used here to perfect ripeness. The wine is around 70% vintage 2016 with 30% reserve wines and spent six years in bottle on the lees before disgorgement in earlier this year. It smells and tastes great, with notes of small red berries, lemon and apricot fruit and hints of toast and apple skin on the nose, palate, and flowing, dry, finish. This drinks well above the price point.
While her review was for a release a few years ago, I won’t be able to beat JancisRobinson.com’s Tamlyn Currin’s description of it: “Rich aromas of freshly baked bread and apricots. Beautiful density and concentration of flavour; the apricot aromas follow through on the palate, along with baked oranges and shortbread. Both breadth and depth, ending in a mouthwateringly long, lemon-zested finish. Gorgeous, crystal-cut bubbles – like tiny diamonds in texture. It has the power and presence to go well with food, but I would rather give this wine the quiet attention and contemplation it deserves and not lose it in the merriment of a noisy table.”
"This Champagne shows some fine maturity. A blend based on the 2014 vintage, it now has toastiness while keeping intense freshness. Acidity and touches of minerality come through the spiciness."
