The Vajra family’s “introductory” Barolo is always one of the best values in high-end Nebbiolo. It’s from a set of higher-altitude vineyards that make this more red-fruited and open than most. In 2019, it shows it’s classic straight-forward cherry, raspberry and rose petal flavors with a polished feel. Give it lots of air or time in cellar and you’ll get more richness, power and intensity. Terrific Barolo.
For You If: You’re getting into Barolo and want to experience the red fruit, rose petal and spice wines from higher sites give; you’re looking for outstanding and cellar-worthy Barolo at a very good price.
Not For You If: You like your Barolo black-fruited or with lots of tobacco/herb notes; you want something to drink without a decant – this needs air.
"This is certainly one of the most popular and versatile wines made in Italy, and deservedly so. The well-priced G.D. Vajra 2019 Barolo Albe shows some ripe fruit and softness with cherry, dried raspberry and crushed rose. This vintage is similar in character to the 2016 release in that both vintages offer a linear style with good structure at the back. The mouthfeel is polished and long, affording accessibility and complexity too. Drink 2024-2038."
