Lower ABV Jeremie Huchet is one of the finest winegrowers in all of Muscadet at his family properties and this comes from perhaps his most famous site: the tiny Clos les Monty’s vineyard in the Goulaine district of Muscadet Serve et Maine. While still pretty cool, this is warmest slice of Muscadet, always giving wines with unusual amounts of body and fruit. Add in the power of old vines and it makes the perfect candidate for extended aging sur lie – on the spent yeast cells of fermentation. During that time what started life as a soft, fruit-filled, wine develops the crisp edges and chisled texture that makes Muscadet so compelling.
Today, subtle scents of the sea, sliced green apples, soft herbs and lime zest build with air as a hint of beeswax joins the aromatic show. The warmth of vintage 2018 and softening effects of 54 months on the lees shows on the palate, where the wine feels round and silky textured and the fruit flavors suggest yellow apple, white grapefruit, tangerine pith and a hint of something almost nutty. The saltiness and chalky mineral that makes Muscadet so refreshing and seafood-friendly comes on strong on the finish as does a big burst of ripe mixed citrus fruit. The interplay between sweet, ripe, fruit and the salty/leesy minerality is pretty compelling and keeps you coming back for another sip so you can enjoy the ride again!
For You If: Certainly for anyone who loves Muscadet – this is a great one! – but also for fans of crisp, minerally, whites like those of Chablis, Rias Baixas or Savoie where cut, texture and minerality are more important than fruit.
Not For You If: You’re in the mood for something fruity like New World Sauvignon Blanc or most Pinot Grigio – this has lovely fruit, but it’s brisk/crisp and the wine is really about pith and stony minerality.
