Flat out one of the most delicious and versatile Italian reds in the shop right now – the kind of wine you can enjoy with casual pizza/pasta nights or break out to share with Cabernet fans and a grilled steak. It’s 100% Lagrein, a wild red grape native to the valley’s along Italy’s Dolomite Mountains in Trentino and Alto Adige. The zippy Italian red structure and juicy black cherry, blackberry and blackcurrant fruit that might appeal to a Cabernet drinker are perfectly matched with more savory elements. Have you ever eaten in a restaurant that cooks meat over an open wood fire and serves salads dotted with bleu cheese or has a cheese cart waiting to roll out between your main and dessert courses? If so, smelling and sipping the 2023 Rubeno will remind you of that place somehow.
Dave McIntyre’s 4-star review in the Washington Post captures it nicely: “More savory than fruity, this gorgeous wine seems to channel the spirit of the Italian Alps. Spice and herbs, meat and mushrooms, some funky aroma from a cheese waiting on the sideboard in the next room, a whiff of smoke from the hearth: It’s all here.”
For You If: You like the blackberry/blackcurrant fruit of a Cabernet Sauvignon matched to juicy Italian red wine structure and complicated by savory, smoky, accents; you’re looking for a delicious red to sip solo or with any kind of pasta to grilled meats to roasted winter vegitables.
Not For You If: You’re looking for the thickness or oaky sheen of Napa Cabernet – this mirrors some of the fruit flavors of Cab but has a decidedly Italian red wine feel; you don’t enjoy anything savory or earthy on your reds – we think the smoky, almost funky, notes are the bomb, but you might disagree.
