Organic/Bio The name of the winery here is actually Vins El Cep, meaning roughly "Wines from the vineyard." Unlike most Cava producrers, Maite Esteve only works with grapes she grows herself - here a blend of 50%Xarel·Lo, 20%Macabeu, 15%Chardonnay and 15%Pinot Noir planted in 1965 and 1990. This is her "grand" bottling from the best grapes of the vintage, the heart of the first press, and given at least 48 months on the lees before disgorgement. And it tastes like Champagne at 2-3x the price.
Wine Enthusiast captures it nicely in their 94 point review, "This Cava is almost clear to the eye, has a diffuse column of bubbles and a nose of Gala apple and jasmine. It feels full in the mouth with bold effervescence on the palate. Brioche, lemon zest, green apple and toasted-nut flavors evaporate into a soft vanilla and citrus-blossom finish." There may not be a better value bottle of bubbles in the market today.
For You If: You're after the grower Champagne experience on a budget - this is authentically "Cava" but has more in common with handcrafted Champagne that most Spanish fizz you've tried.
Not For You If: You're looking to make mimosas - pouring OJ into something this delicious would just be a sharme; you're after something fruity and soft like Prosecco - this shows the non-fruit complexity of long aging on the lees.
