Since being purchased by Francesco and Riccardo Illy of Italy’s leading coffee company in 2008, this estate has moved from strength-to-strength. As Vinous says, “Classicism reigns supreme at the Mastrojanni estate.” Even in hot vintages, the style here is one of relaxed power, with plenty of volume on the palate and very supple, fine, tannins. In 2020 the winegrowing team used their lockdown time to fine-tune farming even more, giving, as Vinous says, “the best attributes of the vintage, warming and silky with racy acidity and sweet tannins. While more approachable than usual, there's plenty of upside potential." Delicious now – especially with an hour in decanter, although that’s hardly essential! – and built to improve through 2035+.
For You If: You love the rich fruit, texture and intensity of Brunello di Montalcino or Chianti Classico Riserva that's ready to enjoy tonight and for 10+ years; you've always wondered about the fuss over Brunello and want to try one that will make the best case the fuss is justified.
Not For You If: You're after Sangiovese that's light/crisp - this is dark and powerful; you prefer your Brunello to include a dollop of spicy new oak - this is done all in older casks.
“Restrained yet intense wine. The nose is fresh with red cherries and pomegranates, integrated violets and a rose-water touch, as well as a vibrant, schist undertone. Full-bodied and graceful, with super elegant tannins, juicy acidity and a long, tense finish. Drinkable now, but best after 2025.”
“The 2020 Brunello Di Montalcino pours a dark red brick color and is expressive with layered aromas of baked cherries, leather, truffle, crushed flowers, and licorice. It's beautifully detailed on the palate, with ultra-fine tannins, a silky texture, wonderfully pure fruit, and a clean, tapering finish with a salty flourish. Very pretty all the way through, it's going to have a wide drinking window and should improve over the coming 10-12 years.”
“You'll recognize this wine by its classy packaging that features a red wax seal on the front label. The Mastrojanni 2020 Brunello di Montalcino is a little shy initially. A few more years, even months, of bottle age should get it to shine. The bouquet is detailed and precise with small forest fruits, dried rose, earth and light spice. It pieces together well over a bright, medium-weight mouthfeel. Drink 2025-2038” (note written November, 2024)
