Lower ABV There is NOTHING impressive about the background of this snappy, fresh, easy-drinking, summertime Sauvignon. We can’t figure out the actual winery name, although it appears to be a co-op or negotiant (someone who buys fruit/wine and then bottles and sells it) near Sancerre. It’s labeled “Vin de France,” meaning the grapes could come from anywhere, (they say “mainly Loire,” so probably near Sancerre and further south). And the Loire’s 2022 vintage was tricky, with hot, dry, conditions making retention of freshness a challenge.
And yet, the wine is pretty stupid good, especially at this price! The solid 88 point review from the UK’s Decanter captures it nicely: “"A Vin de France sourced primarily from the Loire Valley, this wine has subtle floral aromatics lifted by a smoky lemon note and a streak of wet slate. The palate is lean and bright, with flashes of grilled lemon peel, smoky flint, and notes of cut grass. The finish is lifted by bright acidity and a touch of white pepper." We’d add that the wine has shockingly good length, both on the palate where the flavors really sine front-to-back and on the dry, delightfully crisp and complex, finish. An outstanding back porch sipper – the “patio pounder” tag applies here – that will complement grilled fish, springtime salads and more. Great deal on an outstanding little gem.
For You If: You’re looking for an easy-drinking spring/summer white that shows lemon citrus and Granny Smith apple with minimal grapefruit or cut crass; you like plenty of fruit flavors in your wine without going over to “fruity” in style.
Not For You If: You’re after the pink grapefruit, tropical notes, and burst of cut grass New Zealand Sauvignon delivers – this is a tad more ripe tasting and definitely more relaxed.
